DIY bathroom addition

If you have been following for a while, 

I am happy to announce that we are done with our master bathroom!

Finally, I know!

It has been quite a trip.

First of all let me show you what we had when we started.

4X4 1/2 bath on the right

The inside had a toilet and sink, but pretty small to even try to take pictures.

The work started right after Valentine's Day...so about 4 months in the making.

First of all the return vent had to be moved...you just can't have a return vent for the house in your bathroom! 

...I wonder why ;-)

Then it was time to take some walls down!

Destroy few things.

Rebuild some walls

Then we were ready for the plumbers to cut the concrete  (big messy job) and put the drain pipe under there.

Install shower and connect water lines.

Then the drywall (greenboard is great when using in a high humidity area), mud, sand, primer, paint, floor, trim...
(If you are a contractor or expert diyer LOOK AWAY! This might not be up to your standard of excellence!)

This was my first experience with drywall. 
RN helped me measure, cut and install, but from then on I was on my own (since he has a full time job)...taping, mudding, sanding, priming and painting. 
This was done mainly on weekends, an hour or so at the time.
That's why it took me soooo loooong!

did I forget anything? 

Probably so.

It was a big(ger) job, but we are proud of what we have accomplished.

We did all we could by ourselves, but the plumbing HAD to be done by professionals.

We shopped around:

 the first plumber wanted close to $4000 to cut the concrete, install drain pipe, connect water and install shower (but did not include the price for the actual shower and materials)

The second one gave us an estimate of $800 for doing the same as above.

(both plumbers are locals and Americans)

It pays to shop around!

Do I need to say which one we picked?

Moving on.

We were able to add a full bath to our home for a grand total of $2500.

(this includes the plumber, shower walls, wood, drywall, decor, floor...I mean everything)

And just for the record...

I took us longer than we expected, 

as it usually does, 

but in the end it was worth it!

We learned a lot.
