Think outside the Wooden Box

If you are a regular around here,
you know I love a good wooden box.
I have made many,
but today's project is different.
Literally thinking outside the wooden box.
Here were my requirements for this project.

I needed a box that:
would fit on a particular shelf
was light enough for the little children to move
yet, strong enough to keep up especially with Mr. Tornado,
and would look somewhat decent on the shelf in our sunroom.

Ok, got all of that?
Reason why I couldn't just build a storage box out of pallets
(whom I deeply love)
So here is what I used this time around:

Rice box (free-recycled)
This box stores 25lb of rice. Yes, it's a really strong and well made cardboard cube.
Homemade mod podge. (HERE)
(.50c to make it...this was still the same one I made here, over a year ago, and used for several projects)
Foam brush ($tree sells a pack of 9 for $1...and they are reusable)
paper that looks like wood (I got it online $12 for a 48"x12')...I used about 1 linear foot.
Total cost for this project: $1.50 (at the most)

I started by spreading some homemade mod podge on the side of the box.
I did one side at the time.

I then folded the "extra" at the bottom
and then the extra at the top, folding inside.
Then I spread more mod podge on the finished project,
to seal the entire thing, and make the paper more resistant.

I gave a total of 2 coats.

And that's all folks.

Stay Frugal,
Daniela

Pretty neat! I never would've guessed that it wasn't real wood! That's a nice way to have a box without getting splinters too.

Clever faux! I thought it was more of your wood. :) I'm going to try the strawberry thing, too.

LOVE this! Repurposed and recycled! And looks like a million bucks:) The paper reminds me of that beadboard wallpaper that's so popular now. I think I'd like to try them both.
