3 Steps for a Cleaner Dishwasher

Today I am going to share 3 easy and frugal steps to keep your dishwasher running well.
For sparkling dishes load after load, a dishwasher needs monthly cleaning.
Don't worry, this are easy.
First thing to do is to check and clean the filter located on the floor of the dishwasher (underneath the bottom rack).
Some filters trap food residues on the outside surface, so a simple wiping with a paper towel does the job. Other filters require that you unscrew the cover.
Always check your dishwasher owner's manual.
After every load, take a glance at the filter and in the bottom of the dishwasher, especially if you have children loading and running it.
If you have children, don't ask me why.
Picking up any food residues, labels, lids, caps, straws, will help the dishwasher clean dishes better.
Next, is to dump 1 quart of white vinegar

in the bottom of the dishwasher and run it through a complete washing cycle without any dishes.

Finally, make sure the water going into the dishwasher is hot enough by running the kitchen faucet until the water is hot and using the water heating option on the dishwasher (if you have one).
We have a Hi-temp cycle, and a Sani-rinse, that brings the water to very high temperatures and steam.
I use that occasionally to sanitize the dishwasher as well.

These easy 3 steps will help your dishwasher running more efficiently.
Our dishwasher is almost 3 years old and we use it daily (about every 2 or 3 meals).
How do you clean your dishwasher?

Stay Frugal,
Daniela

I am going to share this with my husband - the dishes are his job. He knows the one about the HOT water, but I don't think he does the others.

I have never cleaned our dishwasher other than simply wiping it out from time to time if I see it needs it. My dishwasher probably doesn't need it too much though because I'm one of those people that rinses all the food particles and residues off the dishes before loading the dishwasher anyway. LOL! I'm a bit OCD about it. It drives my mom crazy though. She thinks it's a waste of time.

We scrub our dishes first before loading, but it has been a while since I actually cleaned the washer. Going to try this!

Dearest Daniela,
Either lemon juice or vinegar works very well.

I live in an area with super hard water. Vinegar is not enough. My dishwasher is 8 years old and looks brand new. I run my dishwasher 3 to 4 times a day everyday. (I have 6 kids in this home) What I use to keep the dishwasher in perfect working order is Lemi-Shine. Just 1 teaspoon every other load is all I need to keep my dishwasher in like new condition. It is a wonderful product and NO I am not being paid to endorse this product.

This is great, and I also agree with previous comment about Lemi-Shine...FABULOUS stuff. Our water is ridiculously hard here.

I only run my dishwasher when it's full and since I'm a 1-person family, that could take awhile. I do rinse my dishes first though. I'm definitely going to try the white vinegar with my dishwasher and my washing machine. Thanks for the tips!
