This project came out of desperation.
Almost six months ago I worked on a bedroom for our children.
It's perfect...minus the fact that they share a bed.
The top bunk is just not safe for young children, and we knew they would have to share the bottom bunk (full size) for a few years.

Problem is,
one of them just can't stop moving and the other just can't handle it too well.

Solution of the problem, move them to the room next door, which is slightly bigger.
All we needed was two twin size beds.
When I start looking for twin size frames, both new and used, I knew I had to come up with an alternative idea.
So this is what I started with.
It almost looks like an IKEA futon.
So I though that I could separate the frame in half, make/attach new feet, and have two separate bed frames.
When I told my husband about it, he was not too sure about this idea of mine...but truth is, the beds were going to go in the very same room where the futon was...so the futon had to go...so why not repurpose it?
He gave me the ok to cut it and modify the frame to make my masterpieces.
So here is what I did.
Took it apart.
Made some cuts to existing wood.
Added a couple of slats to the frames.
(2 wooden strips 75c each, 1 for each bed)
I then used some 2x4 scraps to make the feet for the frame.
So now we have 2 twin size frames for the total cost of $1.50.
These are sturdy and ready for a mattress.
Stay tuned for the room reveal.

I would never have thought of doing that.
ReplyDeleteMy husband questions my ideas, but he is beginning to realize that I actually totally think out each idea and they usually work.
Now I have to see the finished beds.
Bravissima Daniela, una ottima idea...Ciao a presto, Mary
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great repurpose! And now they're good for a few years to come.
ReplyDeleteDearest Daniela,
ReplyDeleteGreat repurpose and you sure know what you are doing; Hats off to you!
Hugs,
Mariette
We had an IKEA loft bed; double mattress on top, room under for son's loveseat, CD storage, etc. That was a bear to assemble and disassemble. Solid wood. Excellent condition solid wood. Now carefully stored till we think of a project. Good job, Danielle.

When will your husband learn, he shouldn't question you. You are bound to create something wonderful. I can't wait to see the reveal.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought of doing that, it's just perfect! Can't wait to see the finished beds and new room!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the way you think!

I would never have thought of that either. Can't wait to see the reveal. My problem is the exact opposite. My son has asked me to keep my eyes open for a futon for his overnight visits.
ReplyDeleteYou are so smart! I love that you took what you had and made it into what you need! I am excited to see the room!
ReplyDeleteThat husband of yours is smart to let you have at it. You are one hard working woman who gets things done and does it beautifully. Look forward to the result!
