Tufted Headboard Restoration Hardware Inspired

One of my friends really wanted to redo her bedroom.
And of course I offered to help.
First because it's really fun to be around her (she is the reason why I started running).
Second because I like to build stuff.

She knew what she wanted, but the price tag of some items was pretty high.
Starting from the bed,
this Restoration Hardware bed is about $2000+tax (last time I checked).
She wanted to charcoal fabric and the "wings".
Although she didn't care for the foot board and the diamond pattern of the buttons.

We did the straight rows.
We got to work with about
$100 cost for the

material.

She was my faithful assistant and stapler.
(and photographer)

We did it in two days,
about 5 hours from start to finish.
***she did covered the buttons prior to the project***

So here how we built this.
We started with a piece of wood of a couple of inches wider than her mattress,
and we went with 4 feet tall.
We measured the distance between the holes with a straight edge
(where the buttons would go).
You can space them apart as you like,
and make a diamond pattern or straight rows like we did.
(you could actually use a pegboard sheet, and just mark the holes you are wishing to use)
We used the wood because she already had that leftover from another project.
 Then we added the foam.
Again, choose your thickness.
She didn't want it too "puffy".
You will have 4 layers total:
wood
foam
batting
fabric
Then it's time to add the buttons.
At this point it's best to have 2 people,
as you thread the button through the holes, pull them and secure on the back with a staple gun.

When the buttons are all in place,
then stretch the fabric on all 4 sides and secure on back with staple gun.
At this point, if you only want the tufted headboard without wings,
you are done!
If you want wings, here the few more steps.
You will need fabric and batting long enough to cover the legs.
Place the wooden legs against the batting and fabric. The legs will be a couple of feet longer than the headboard height.
(again, depending on how high you want the headboard).
Then use screws long enough to go through the wood and attach to the actual headboard.
Make sure you screw the leg wood to the headboard wood piece.
Now wrap the "top fabric" and fold down and around.
Secure on the back with staple gun.
And here it is.
Freestanding at this point.
Moved behind the bed.
She is keeping the color scheme in this room to a grey, white and yellow.
Can't wait to see the pillow covers she is making, accessorize, and how the room is going to turn out.

Then again,
total cost for the entire project,
right around $100.

I told her husband I just saved him a couple of thousand $$$.

  1. It came out super nice. What a great friend you are.

I remember when not too long one could buy sheets or drapes at RH, but now it is more like a designer store and too much. You have to order knobs now, because they don't even have them available in the store. I lived in Marin county when he had only one store! xoxo Su

  2. OH MY GOODNESS! You are so smart! I love how great that looks and how much money you saved by doing it yourself. Those tufted headboards are so popular right now. You were a good friend to help her with that. You are so good with tools and I've never tried them! Hope you will share her room when it's all done. Sounds pretty!

  4. GREAT job, Dani! WOW! You did a wonderful job on that. Now tell her to soak it with Scotchguard Fabric spray (if she has kids) and it will look new forever. xo Diana

Is that 3/4 inch plywood you used for the back and is that a 2x4 and a ? for the side pieces?

  9. Totally cool....now, question, is she using a metal bed frame that is separate? In other words, how is it attached to the bed??
