This year was my first year attempting a "Winter" garden.
If you remember, back in January I built a simple pvc-plastic hoop house.
I planted mixed lettuce, spinach and kale.
Here is what we have so far.
The kale didn't.
That said, as I first attempted to start growing anything in cold sub freezing temperatures (back in January),
I am happy with the outcome.
Both salad and spinach should keep producing until too hot summer days.
Seeds are organic and heirloom.
Even so, with a couple of dollars we can potentially eat those vegetables for at least the next 2 months.
I also already planted
10 snap peas,
4 zucchini and 4 yellow squash.
This year I gave a chance to seeds and started my plants that way.
Looks like they did well.
In the next week I will be planting my tomato plants.
I have 4 different heirloom varieties,
about 10 plants total.
We also added 2 more rain barrels (project here),
and in just a couple of days we have collected almost 100 gallons of water!!
and in just a couple of days we have collected almost 100 gallons of water!!
They are overflowing and we are still getting plenty of rain.
Welcome Spring!
Stay Frugal,
The garden is doing well. Squash didn't grow so great here. It seem to use a lot of water, for what it produced. Other people I know around here have it take over the garden. I have that problem with mint, it one of the beds, but it smells so pretty. That's a lot of runoff that you can collect there. I would like to make a rain barrel .It only rains during two seasons a year, but what little I collect I could put on the trees. Great idea for you to make your own.
ReplyDeleteWow, looks like you'll have a bumper crop this summer! My husband started a bunch of vegetables with seeds and is about to plant them outside now. Lettuce, broccoli, jalapenos, sweet peppers, tomatoes, beans, onions, I can't remember what else. I'm in charge of growing the flowers! We're trying to make it a family project. Good luck with your garden!
ReplyDeleteYou are like a pioneer woman! So self sufficient in every way. Glad to see that your seeds turned into beautiful specimens and that your winter garden took off.
ReplyDeleteYou go, Garden Girl! I want a rain barrel. :)

Your garden space is wonderful. Look at those tomato plants! Look forward to lots of delicious, fresh produce. :-)
ReplyDeleteDearest Daniela,
ReplyDeleteYour other plants are looking very healthy; so forget the kale.
It sounds like you have the exact same weather as we are having all week. Plenty of rain indeed, grass feels even soggy under foot.
Hugs and happy weekend to you.
