Fabric lined and painted pine wooden crates

Today's project was one of those impromptu
project.
Fabric lined (on the inside) and painted pine (on the outside) wooden crates.

It was fast and turned out great.
I started with two wooden crates that I already had.
The crates are the plain unfinished pine ones.
Until I stained them (about 8 years ago).
Today I added some painted numbers and some dropcloth.

I use those crates to store clothes,
so I wanted to be able to "hide" the inside by adding fabric on the inside.
(the easy way)
I drew the

numbers on the outside.

You could print something out and trace it over the wood with carbon copy paper.
Or you can free hand.
Use some small paint brushes...I have pretty much every size you can ever find.
Life of an artist at it's best.
I used the really tiny one for the smaller writings.

The paint was a leftover can, with barely anything left in it...
but you will not need that much anyway.

I added dropcloth on the inside.
Measure, cut and hot glue the fabric.
You could also just use 2 pieces of white cardboard to put on the inside,
but I wanted the dropcloth for some texture.

So here they are back in the Master Bedroom.
What you are looking at is the separation shelf  we built few years back, to divide the sleeping area of our room and the hang out area.
The separation shelf is also my "dresser".
Yes, this is were I keep my clothes.
I think it's fun to use what I already have and turn it into something useful and nice.

Stay Frugal,
Daniela

  1. That's so nice that you can't see the clothes through the crates. It gives the entire shelving piece a nice ordered and attractive look. xoxo

  2. What a brilliant idea to just cut cloth and hot glue it to the sides! I love it and the numbers are cute, they add the extra touch to make them special! Fun!

  3. I love your crates! So cute with the stenciled numbers. I like how you've used different baskets and other containers to store your clothes in that shelving unit. Such a good idea for both style and function.

  11. The crates are wonderful.

And you are not the only one to have an unconventional dresser. When we switched bedrooms in our house with the guest room, there was no way my husband was going to move the IKEA Expedit. It became is dresser and it is working great.
