I started in March and now it's June.
Make sure the part that goes in the water is the
light brown spot (the bottom of the pit).
Add/change water to keep half of the pit covered until it cracks.
From the crack there will be a root growing down and the green stem growing up
So about 3 months from pit to ready to plant.
I am making a couple extra to give away as gifts.
Eat avocados and grow trees.
Stay Frugal,
We love avocado around here. I've got this pinned to try.

Cool, looking forward to see how it does for you. Keep us posted. :-)
ReplyDeleteHave your avocado and eat it too!!! Win! WIN!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty neat! I didn't know you could do that. My husband buys avocados to make guacamole, but I don't eat them!
ReplyDeleteWow, keep me updated when it get to the soil please x
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to do that when I was a child, but it never survived the planting in soil (maybe because she then forgot to water it). I hope you'll keep us updated, because I'd really like to try!
ReplyDeleteOh someone gave me an avocado plant once and it was beautiful! I'm going to start one! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips Dani. I may just have to try this. Have a great 4th.

Bart started three a few weeks ago... they are sitting in our kitchen window right this moment :) Hope it takes off like yours did, chicka!! Love your posts!
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to try this but never have! Yay for you! I love avocados!
ReplyDeleteDearest Daniela,
ReplyDeleteWish we would be able to grow tall, fruit bearing trees! We did grow a plant once but it dies in this climate. Our friends in California have the real trees and what a treat to pick your own avocado.
We eat half an avocado with our breakfast; every day! They are so healthy.
Hugs,
Mariette
I've always wanted to do this. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteSigh. this is exactly what I did, got to the crack phase and then nothing. The water may have gotten a little low and it dried out. But...I am sure it should have still grown.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 of these little guys growing in pots on my desk at work, and have a third one that just cracked here at home. I have had more failures than successes, but overall, I LOVE my little avocado plants! They look like mini palm trees. :)

This is fascinating! Pardon my ignorance, but will it eventually produce avocados or just produce the tree? Just didn't know if avocados grew only in certain climates. I'm going to try this. I'd also love a lemon tree (even if I never get a lemon). :-)
