Homemade Apple sauce

I sometime hear how much a "healthy" diet can cost,
but I am the proof that you can eat healthy while on a small budget.
(ours is $45 a week/$180 a month)
One of the things we do is to buy organic apples in bulks from a local place.
You can even split the cost with another family,
but apples can last months without going bad, if kept in a cool place.
So apples sauce is one of my favorite things to
make.
All I use to make apple sauce is
4 medium/large apples
1/2 cup of water

I don't add any sugar, and I prefer to use apples that are not as "crispy".
Those make the best apple sauce.
So peel and core the apples,
cut in squares,
put in a small pot and add 1/2 cup of water.
Cover with lid and once it starts boiling, turn down to medium heat and cook for about 25 minutes.
Use a blender to puree the apples,
and store in a glass container in the fridge.
This makes 6-8 servings of apple sauce
(like the little serving size in those plastic container they sell at the store)

This apple sauce is amazing, naturally sweet, organic and very cost effective.
My husband likes to add cinnamon to it,
but the rest of us likes it "as is".

Stay Frugal,
Daniela

Will you help me support St. Jude by donating today?
It doesn't have to be much, just anything you want to give.
It's tax deductable as well

  1. It looks yummy. My mom makes a great applesauce too, but I never thought to do this myself!

We also don't spend much on food. But it's a struggle not to waste, because my spouse's schedule is variable: gone a week, gone two days, or three days, and he is the big eater.

  2. Okay, I need to know what you do!! I spend so darn much on food and I want to cut the budget, but I am pretty sure I spend $45 a week on just MILK! What do you eat on a typical day for breakfast lunch and dinner?

  3. So yummy, isn't it! I like to use our McIntosh apples, cuz then I don't even have to mash them. Of course they don't hold up in a pie, but they do make great applesauce. And I'm with you. I like it plain - no sugar or cinnamon.

  5. It must be in the genes, because I like to add cinnamon to mine too. LOL! Thanks for sharing how you make it homemade. I'm sure you already know this by now, but I buy mine in the jar. Shhhhh......our secret.

  7. I love picking apples in the fall at our local orchard and making applesauce. It freezes great and tastes so much better than store bought! Yum!

  10. Dearest Daniela,
This is a very practical and above all healthy way of eating home made apple sauce.
Hope you are doing fine; considering the fact that you are so far away from your loved ones at a time when a hug goes a long way.
Who knows, I might have given those final hugs myself tonight... That's the tough life of a first generation immigrant. A tight hug to you!
