This recipes was inspired by a need of nutrients and a fast energy snack.
Since I have started to run (about 8 months ago), I quickly realized how many calories runners burn.
During a training run, I burn anywhere 500 to 1000 calories and
during a half marathon I burned over 1500 calories in just 2 hours.
When running, it is key to get plenty of nutrients and calories
...because without proper nutrition you won't run very far.
This bars have one key ingredient for energy:
honey.

c Honey
1
c Peanut Butter (or Almond Butter)
4
T Unsweetened Cocoa
5
scoops Protein Powder
2
c Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
2
T water
In
a bowl, mix honey and peanut butter.
Add
the cocoa and the protein powder.
I
roll my mixture into balls (about 20), but you can spread it out and cut it into
bars.
I store it in a seal tight container in the fridge, (but it doesn't require refrigeration).
This recipe makes up a total of about 2500 calories,
about 130 cal per ball.
This is much cheaper (and healthier) than buying prepackaged protein bars, and you can really customize this to your liking.
Next time I am going to substitute the peanut butter with my
made with coconut oil.

ReplyDeleteThis so reminded me of my days as a distance runner...I was always panicked about having food with me constantly! What a nice problem to have. I've kept up the running 'til recently when I began swimming again, but you may inspire me to do them both.
