Growing Blackberries

Who would have thought that growing blackberries would have been so easy.
A couple of days ago, at a local neighborhood market, I saw a t-shirt that said:
"grow food, not lawns".
It made me think.
I have always liked the idea to
 grow my own vegetables,
composting and
use the water from our diy rain barrel.
And that's what we have been doing for six years.
But this Spring I decided to give fruit a try.
On my quest to landscaping our front yard, I added some fruit tree and bushes to the mix.
One pear tree and one peach tree.
Then two unrelated friends called me up and ask me if I wanted blackberry bushes.
One friend gave me two.
2 months ago, before planting
Another friend gave me a bunch (10?) of small seedling...a few didn't make it.

Fast forward 2 months,
this is what I see today.
2 months later, after planting
Blackberries!!
I am so excited, I mean, I really didn't do much beside planting them in the ground.
Be sure to pick a well drained and sunny area.
So, to many more (free) blackberries.
Cheers!

Stay Frugal,

  2. WOW! We used to have a wild blackberry bush in our backyard growing up. It was always so much fun to go pick them.

  3. Hope you don't have chiggers where you live. Used to get them every time we picked berries growing up. (I'm from Texas.)

  6. I love growing fruit, it returns each year and needs so little attention. Our blackberries have taken over a very large area but have yet to get any fruit on them, still waiting.

  8. Wow! Your blackberry plants definitely loved your soil and green thumbs. They look great. I've been thinking of adding some fruit trees to my yard too.

  9. As you may know, I have a black thumb so I am very jealous of your blackberries. I have to go to the places where I pick them. At least it is cheaper.

  11. Dearest Daniela,
When they are young they are fine but the grow and are wild and need to be pruned back. I got so scratched all over my body as I tried to weed them. We also had raspberries. In the beginning we could harvest enough for eating them with yogurt and even once for making jam. But than the birds found out and must have whistled to every bird in the neighborhood. They were up a lot earlier than we... so no more fruits for us left. We ended up by taking them out. Now we appreciate more the enormous labor that goes into growing berries! We get them from Costco and enjoy them when its season. As kids we did harvest plenty of them but they were growing in masses, easy to pick. Dad even used the horse wagon so we could stand on it for reaching higher. Enjoy your summer's harvest and good luck!

  13. I love blackberries. We used to pick them when I was young. They were always growing wild. I never though about growing them in my yard. I really need to give this a try. I grow tomato plants and love having the fresh tomatoes.
