Pillow covers (the easy way)

I am not, by any means a professional seamstress.
But I know how to sew straight lines...and with that you can do A LOT of neat projects.
This project requires measuring your pillow
that needs a cover and sew 2 straight lines. Pretty easy, no zipper, buttons or velcro.
Here it is simplified.

Measure the sides of the pillow,
then double the length + 2 extra inches for the length and 1" for the height.
(see drawing above)

Sew the 2 "open" sides.

turn inside out.
Done.

Can't be easier than this.
I call it a pocket cover...not sure if that's the correct terminology...
back of pillow
I am going to add a little something to the covers. Still not sure if I want to add numbers, a special date reminder, a writing...
What would you add?
Stay Frugal,
Daniela

  5. I've never thought to do pillows this way before. It's kind of brilliant.

  6. How great! I love dropcloth pillows. They can be used anywhere! It's nice that you can add a design to them if you want to also.

  7. This envelope style for pillow covers changed my DIY life! It's easy to add a fabric loop and handsome button for Pottery Barn-like look to make the closure side presentable (gives you 2 different looks in one pillow). It's also easy to make flanges on envelope-style pillows. Just decide how deep you want the flange to be and add that amount to the outer measurements, plus seam allowance. Then sew that depth on the OUTSIDE of the pillow cover once you've turned it right side out.

Have fun deciding how to embellish your pillows!

  8. wow! that is easy! I've never seen anyone do it that way with just two seams! Amanda Blake Soule in her book, Handmade Home (library has it), shows a couple different ways to incorporate a child's drawing into fabric projects. Might be fun for pillows for the girls! : )

  9. Great tutorial! I have made this style also and this is a great description you have done. Oh, and thanks for reminding me that I have fabric in my stack for pillows that I need to make soon!

  10. Love it, Dani! I have part of a drop cloth leftover from my headboard project so I just might have to make it into a pillow!

I am thinking of doing our monogram on the fabric first.

I have also been finding "ugly" but well made pillows at Goodwill for $4! One was even down feather filled.

  13. This for sure is an easy project! I don't like zippers, I like Velcro but usually takes some extra work, my next ones are going to be pocket covers, thanks for sharing!

  17. These pillow covers are great. I know I'm all late. I'm seriously catching up with my blog reading since it's sleeting outside and we got off work early. But this style is called envelope back or envelope style. I think it would look cool with one of those partial doily stamps like on a corner. I don't know if that's descriptive enough, but I always liked that style where you see only part of the image.
