It has been over a month since my last post.
A lot has happened and we just got back from Italy, which is home for me.
She passed over 3 years ago, but her house still has plenty of stuff.
Everyone in the family has been in there to get what they wanted,
and I was the last one to go.
All the stuff was headed to the dump, as they are putting the house up for sale.
My dad remembers eating out of these type of wooden plates, bowls.
Every home had wooden plates.
The bigger the family, the bigger the bowl.
The bowl was placed in the center of the table, and people ate out of it at the same time.
She was still using it until she passed.
I found it in the sink next to her washing machine.
I think she used this washboard more than she used the washing machine.
I also got a tablecloth, several large olive jars and other items.
With all the people that have been "digging" through the house, I was surprised that no one had picked up those items.
I guess people have different taste.
I will be showing you soon some pictures of places in Italy that most tourist will never see.
Stay Frugal,
Daniela
Amazing. I can't wait to hear more about your trip. I love the washboard.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Dani. So glad you were able to travel back home AND be able to bring those things back. Those are pretty darn awesome in themselves, but having the family history attached makes them just that much better. Score!
ReplyDeleteGreat Treasures Dani. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about your trip.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteOh boy, I can not wait. :-))
I love your treasures. And all the history you share with us makes it extra fun for me, I love learning about other countries and people.
Thank You!
Carla
Such treasures you were able to bring home. All to often young people don't see the beauty in their ancestors things. Enjoy them and I can't wait to see how you use them in your home.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I love the items that you brought back with you. Not only are they nice but they mean something to you! Those wooden bowls are amazing! i loved hearing how they were used.
ReplyDeleteWow Dani what wonderful treasures! I am sure you are glad everyone has different taste that you, :) Sounds like you had a great trip I can't wait to hear more about it!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were able to visit home and bring back some family heirlooms. I love the wooden bowls. Looking forward to more of your trip!
ReplyDeleteDearest Daniela,
ReplyDeleteOh bless your heart! What an emotional thing for selecting some of the leftovers from your dear great aunt and also from the farm house. There are so many memories attached to them.
Yes, my Parents told us also stories of eating out of one center bowl... Hard to imagine at present times; how spoiled we all have gotten! It is not even that long ago that life was something about the bare minimum; the Back to Basics concept.
How strong those women were by doing physical work and even never fully adjusting to the modern era with an electrical washing machine. Sad in a way and maybe not, as they were so content doing these labors of love. It became second nature and in that concept they died...
She will be smiling down from heaven, seeing her beloved possessions have traveled all the way to the new world and will again be loved, in a different way. And with that, most importantly she will live on in the fond memories and the stories for your children.
Hugs,
Mariette
