From our Italian Farm, to our American Home

I know, we have been back to US for a month now, and I still have more things to show you that I found at our Italian family farm.
Some of you have asked how did I fit all that stuff in the suitcases, I am going to tell you at the end of this post.
For now, here are the last things I brought back.
These are some old tools, an other various rusty things.

Then here are a couple of pails that have been used at the farm.
This one was used to get water from the well.
Yes, the farm does not get water from the city, so we have a cistern to collect rain water, and a well.
The rain water is used for watering plants and for everything else.
Yes, the water is clean (the "debris", if any, collect at the bottom of the cistern).

I also brought back this damigiana.
It was used for wine.
When you go and buy wine, you bring your own containers...
see, recycling and reusing has been around forever.
I only brought back one...

So here is how I brought back all this stuff.

We are a family of five, so we get to check in one suitcase per person.
When we go to Italy, I fit ALL our stuff in 1 1/2 suitcase...yes, I like to travel light and bring only the essential things...
but I am a no frills kind of person in daily life too.
I still bring the five suitcases, because I buy things for my family and friends to take them.
So, when we come back, I have 3 1/2 suitcases that can be filled with things and food.
I am also a creative and efficient packer, which does help.

The above picture shows you how I packed 2 pails and a glass damigiana.

Stay Frugal,

  5. What must the people checking bags think when they scan your luggage and see rusty tools :). Regardless, you brought back some treasures. I love the wine bottle. And, I am really impressed with your smart and efficient packing skills.

  6. Dearest Daniela,
That's exactly what we always have done. Very few clothes and we also keep things at our friends for wearing there, even shoes. That creates more room for bring-back items. We've carried so many pieces and you do become very efficient by fitting things together. Only too bad that they have changed the maximum weight so drastically. It used to be 32 kg and now 23... reversed and not two anymore but only one...
But we never give up; this is far more economical than having things shipped.
    Hugs to you,
    Mariette
